How to add a link to your bio on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and X
Each platform hides the link field in a different place, and on most of them a URL typed into the bio text is just text. Here is where the real field is on each one.
Where the field is on each platform
| Platform | Where the field is | How many links |
|---|---|---|
| Profile, Edit profile, Links, Add external link | Several. The first one shows and the rest collapse behind a "and N more" line, so put the important one first. | |
| TikTok | Profile, Edit profile, the Website field | One. |
| YouTube | YouTube Studio, Customization, Basic info, Links | Several, each with its own title. One of them can sit on the channel banner next to your subscriber count; the rest sit under your channel description. |
| X | Edit profile, the Website field | One, and it is the only clickable thing in your profile header. |
| Your profile, the pencil next to your name, Contact info | Several, each with a label, inside the contact panel rather than under your headline. | |
| Twitch | Creator Dashboard, Settings, Channel | The About panel, plus the social links underneath it. |
| Spotify | Spotify for Artists, on the artist profile, not the app | The links on your artist profile. |
| Settings, Claimed accounts | One site, claimed rather than typed. | |
| Your email signature | Wherever you write your mail | As many as you like, and this is the one with the highest click rate of the lot. |
A URL typed into the bio text is not a link
On Instagram, only @mentions and hashtags become links inside the bio text. On X it is the same. That is why so many bios end with an address that nobody can tap: it was typed in the wrong box. The fields in the table above are the ones that produce something clickable.
What to know before you go looking
- Instagram lets you give each link a title, and it is worth doing. The title is what people read, and "Book a session" outperforms a raw URL.
- TikTok hides the Website field until your account type or follower count qualifies for it. Switching to a Business account under Settings and privacy, Account, makes it appear. TikTok has moved that requirement more than once, so check rather than trusting an article from last year, including this one.
- YouTube may ask a brand new channel to verify a phone number before external links appear to viewers.
- LinkedIn puts the website in the contact panel, so people have to open it. The headline itself is usually the better place to say what you do.
- Pinterest gives you analytics for the site you claimed, which no other field on this list does.
Point all of them at the same address
Every field above takes one URL, and you will change what you want to promote far more often than you will want to edit six profiles. Point them all at one page you control, then change what is inside that page. The profiles never need touching again.
It also means you can measure it. When all five profiles point at one page, that page can tell you which rows people tap. When each profile points somewhere different, you have five separate stories and no way to compare them.
Make the link look like something when it is shared
When somebody pastes your address into a chat, the app draws a card from the page’s title, description and preview image. If the page has none, the card is a grey box with a domain in it, and people scroll past grey boxes. Set those three things wherever your page is hosted before you hand the address out.
And if the address is going onto a poster, a business card or a jar, use a domain you own, so that the printed copies keep working when you change your mind about everything else. That is the one decision here you cannot reverse later.
